Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was the first European explorer to begin the exploration and colonization of the Americas. On October 12, 1492, he landed at a small island in the Bahamas. He then sailed south to Cuba and Hispaniola, and returned to Spain believing that he had found islands off the coast of Asia.

He made three other voyages to the New World, and was temporarily an unpopular governor of the Spanish colony on Hispaniola, leading to a short imprisonment in Spain until he was exonerated by King Ferdinand.

North America and South America were not discovered yet so instead of finding India he found present day Bahamas. The Native Americans we know today are called Indians because Christopher Columbus thought he was in the Indies when he met the Native Americans so he called them Indians.
