It derives from the Siculi people, a Hindo-European race who first settled on the Eastern part of the island around 1000 BC, replacing the earlier Sicani tribes from Northern Libya who were the island's first inhabitants, but were exterminated by the Carthiganians soon before the Siculi arrived. The name 'Siculi' had mutated into 'Sicily' by the time the Romans settled the island.
