What did Herbert Hoover do to help his people and country during the great depression?

Hebert Hoover did do nothing really!! He did try Little to fight the Depression but his actions often backfired. For example, he tried to balance the the Federal budget by cutting by cutting government spending and raising taxes. This pulled money out of the economy which made the slump worse. Some of Hoovers actions made him very unpopular. For example, he believed that Federal Relief- aid to the poor- would make people dependent on government. so he would not support giving Relief.

Hoover really helped the great depression . Hoover believed that it was best not to give handouts to people because then they wouldn't want jobs anymore. So many people starved because he thought it was best that way. He did help employ some people though. He created the "Hoover Dam" project. Which gave many jobs to local people. When that did not work (stop the depression), he became inactive for a while, trusting to the idea that it all would self-correct. When that did not work, he organized an international moratorium in war debts and reparations. This actually did help stem the slide further into depression, but only briefly. Then he set up the Reconstruction Finance Corp. to bring federal aid to hard pressed banks and businesses. First, it depends on whether you ask Republicans or Democrats about this. The public perception was that Hoover "did little"-- in fact, many people called it the Hoover Depression. But as a Republican, he genuinely believed in a "laissez-faire" policy-- that the government should not intervene in the economy too much; and he also seemed to believe the downturn was only temporary and would soon correct itself (there are a number of historical newspapers online, and you can read for yourself how badly Hoover misjudged the situation). But the economy did not recover; in fact, it got worse, and Hoover lost the 1932 election to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who did believe in government's role in fixing the economy; most historians agree it was Roosevelt's policies that turned things around and contributed to the economic recovery.
