Hermann Maas (1877-1970) was a German Protestant pastor who from about the age of 26 onwards was pro-Jewish and worked for understanding between Christians and Jews. In 1932 he helped to establish an organization in Germany to combat antisemitism, and during the Nazi period he helped many Jews leave Germany, even after the outbreak of war. In 1943 he was forced out of office and the following year he was sent to a labour camp. He was the first German to be officially invited to visit Israel (1950) and in 1964 he was named as one of the Righteous Among the Nations.
