In the early days of the program, it was designed as a training program for future Nazi Officers, some were employed as messengers and large numbers were manning anti aircraft positions. In the final days of the war they were used as cannon fodder against the approaching soviets.

The Boy Scouts and other youth organizations in Germany were abolished soon after the Nazis came to power, and their members were used to form the first ranks of the Hitler Youth. Needless to say, they would have to be of pure German stock.
