James Watt improved on the design of early steam engines. His patented inventions included a separate water-cooled chamber for condensing steam, dramatically improving the efficiency of steam engines that were developed at the beginning of the industrial revolution.
James Watt did not invent the steam engine but redesigned the early steam engine radically improving the power, efficiency and cost effectiveness. He also adapted his engine to produce rotary motion.
James Watt did not invent the steam engine, simple forms of the idea existed a very long time ago. Later, as industry began to grow, more coal was needed to fuel it. In those days mines were always half flooded and many types of pumps were built to try to pump them out. Richard Trevithicks steam pumps were doing a fair job in Cornwalls tin mines but bigger and better pumps were needed. Watt put his brilliant mind to it. He streamlined the clumsy mechanics and added a condenser to turn it into an efficient and economic power source. The new factories being built to accomodate the Industrial Revolution that was growing fast needed power and called James Watt to help. He built engines for the purpose, a single engine could, through a system of belts and pulleys, power the entire factory. The expansion of Britain due to the new wealth pouring in from its factory products needed more efficient ways of movement and railways came into being. The obvious source of power was the steam engine. Although the the steam engine is now viewed as an interesting piece of antiquated oddity the people of Britain, indeed the world owe a great deal to James Watt and those who came before him.

im pretty sure James watt invented the steam engine -- something in the agricultural business during the industrial revolution!

He didn't invent it, he simply improved upon the Newcomen steam engine to make it a more viable machine and consequently helped begin the industrial revolution in Britain.
