Ponce de Leon first explored Puerto Rico in 1508 while assigned to Hispaniola. He found gold and claimed the island for Spain. He became the island's first governor in 1509 and founded the first settlement. In 1512 he lost the office to politics.

He found the Gulf Stream and arrived on the North American continent on April 3, 1513. Soon after he went back to Puerto Rico and did not return until 1521 when he hoped to found a colony. He was attacked by natives and was shot by a poisoned arrow. Within three days he was dead at the age of 47.

The Gulf Stream is probably his most important find since it is a powerful current in the Atlantic Ocean that would become a naval highway for Spanish ships returning to Spain. When he discovered it in 1513 he was surprised by the fact he couldn't sail against it even in strong winds.

On his first voyage to Florida he had with him 3 ships and a crew that included one European woman (the first in FL), two free black African men ( also the first in FL), two Indian slaves, and one white slave.
