In 1769, Nathan Hale entered Yale College. After graduation in 1773, Hale taught school for one year at East Haddam, Connecticut. He then moved to New London, Connecticut.

Although Hale was highly successful in his teaching, he was also deeply concerned for American rights. He would eventually be a soldier in the Continental Army, with the rank of captain.
