Cromwell's government introduced electoral reform, religious toleration, and the first British Parliament. He conquered Ireland and Scotland, made England a feared military power in Europe, and expanded its overseas empire. He refused to rule without constitutional authority and was eventually succeeded by Charles II.

Charles I ruled England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as King. He was the son of James VI of Scotland who, in 1603 as James I had become king of England and Scotland (Great Britain). Charles ruled in conjunction with a parliament of nobles and elected men who were property owners (squires and the like). Basically, a political disagreement between Charles and his parliament over money for an army caused Charles to disolve parliament and rule as an autocrat. Now Cromwell (a land holder and elected member of parliament) was not happy with this. Many of his peers were also unhappy and put pressure on Cromwell (an influencial man of the time) to persuade the King to reinstate parliament. The King refused. Cromwell was asked to go to war against King Charles. Cromwell's friends said it was justified in the eyes of God. Cromwell made his famous quote; "Every man who wages war believes God to be on his side. I'll warrant (bet) that God must often wonder who is on his (God's side)." Cromwell and his peers went to war against the King charging him with treason against the English people. Charles lost the war and then lost everything from the neck up. Cromwell refused the title of 'King' but took on the title of Lord Protector. Following the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, Charles II had Cromwell's body dug up, hung drawn and quartered and the parts sent to the furthest points of the country.
