What did Oliver cromwell do to upset the Irish?

He tried to take over ports on the East Side of Ireland to try and create reinforcements and logistics from England. The first town to fall was Drogheda where thousands of people were massacred such as Catholic Priests as ordered by Cromwell himself

Oliver Cromwell wanted Irish land because it was better so he made families with many kids and mothers move to a different place where it was not better. Because of this it made the Irish people hate Oliver Cromwell for ages and they probably still do now.

Actually, He went to Ireland and tryed to make the Irish change there religon to the religon he belived in (i think it might have been Christianity) The Irish were having non of it and hated Oliver Cromwell for it.

In 1649, Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, sailed to Ireland with 3,000 Ironsides to put an end to the Irish Civil War. He and his army landed in Ringside, then immediately marched to Drogheda. The city was being defended by the English Royalist Sir Arthur Aston. Cromwell sent Sir Arthur a demand of surrender, but when there was no reply, he began to storm the city. The account of what happened can be read in Oliver's own words, in a letter he wrote to the house of commons shortly after the battle.

"Our army came to Drogheda on 3 September.

On Monday 9th the battering guns began. I sent Sir Arthur

Aston a request to surrender the town.

Receiving no satisfactory answer, the guns beat down

the corner tower, and opened breaches in the east and

south walls.On Tuesday 10th, after some hot fighting, we entered.

Several of the enemy, including Sir Arthur Aston, retreated

into Mill Mount, a place very difficult to attack. Our men were

ordered by me to put all to the sword. I also forbade them

to spare any people in the town who had weapons.

In the great church almost 1000 of them were put to the

sword, fleeing there for safety. I think that night we

put to the sword in all about 2000 men. This is the

righteous judgement of God upon those barbarous

wretches who have dipped their hands in so much

innocent blood. It will help to prevent bloodshed for the future".

Oliver Cromwell defeated the city, offering them their lives if they surrendered. But once the weapons had been passed up, and the Irish people were completely at the mercy of Cromwell, he betrayed them and killed every man, woman and child. From there, Oliver campaigned through Ireland, crushing the opposition and laying waste to the land. After nine months, the Rebellion could not hold up any longer, and Cromwell returned with a scarred and scared Ireland in his pocket. To rub salt to the wound, Cromwell sent an order to send the surviving children to the West Indies, where they worked as slave laborours on sugar plantations. Most of them died.

Oliver Cromwell is known in Ireland as one of the cruelest men ever to walk on the Earth. He is hated to this day, and really, can you blame them?

Oliver Cromwell put the Irish through living hell, there are many many books you could read or even Google it. Just an example of the kind of things, in the 17th Century, in the space of 10 years, Oliver Cromwell murdered up to 500,000 Irish men, women and children and also sent another 300,000 to the west indies to work as slaves. He was a HORRIBLE person, and I really hope he's rotting in hell right now.

From the Irish's point of view Cromwell was what you might call a 'Villain'.

Cromwell was a Puritan (extreme Protestant) and the Ireland was a Catholic country. So their beliefs collided.

He killed thousands of Irish men and women and was even heard to nail a baby on the door of the church!

Though, he did manage to stop the war going on in Ireland...but that doesn't really matter.

If you really want to know what the irish think of him, walk up to an Irish person and say "You know what...Oliver Cromwell was quite the cool guy...i like him LOADS"
