Isabella wanted to control the spice trade and spices were rare, expensive and very popular in Europe. So whoever controlled the spice trade made a lot from it. She also wanted to expand Spain.
When Columbus had an audience with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, he was able to convince them to give him a small fleet to sail west from Spain to reach Asia. He sailed on the flagship, the Santa Maria, and had two smaller ships: the Pinta and the Niña.
Isabella did not give Columbus any men. He had to get them himself out of the prison. He got 90 men.
