The royal navy was large enough to stop a German invasion but not if they would be attacked from the air so before an invasion Hitler needed aerial superiority. He tried to destroy all RAF bases and Rolls Royce factories to stop the RAF. The main reasons the RAF succeeded were that they had Radar and Germany greatly underestimated its effectiveness. Radar combined with skilled pilots and good planes helped stop the Germans also German fighters had small fuel tanks and could only be over England for 20 minuets before needing to turn back.
