Rosa Parks was a woman who had gotten on the bus, saw an available seat and sat in it. When a white male spotted her in a seat near the front of the bus and wanted to sit down, convention, at the time, was that persons of black color would get up in favor of a white color.

However, Rosa was tired, and frankly angry that this younger man would demand this of her. He said get up, she said No. As a consequence, police were called, press was called and the beginnings of sit-ins were inspired. All because a woman who had worked hard and deserved a courtesy was told to get to the back of the bus with the others.

There is a current parallel with hassidic (orthodox jewish) law where it is implied women should do the same. (Heard it on NPR) This is something we can observe in our time.
