The bus incident occurred in 1955. Rosa Parks was secretary of the Montgomery branch of the NAACP from 1943 until 1956.

She was a volunteer at the NAACP. Parks also worked as a housekeeper and seamstress for a white couple. She later worked at the Montgomery Fair department store, but she lost that job when a bus incident occurred.
