Civil war field hospitals were gruesome, awful places. Most were makeshift hospitals in a person's home or community building. There was often only one or two doctors to attend to hundreds of wounded soldiers. Medical techniques were extremely primitive compared to today, and if a soldier had a wounded arm or leg, that limb was usually sawed off and thrown into a pile of limbs. The soldiers were kept in close, cramped quarters and unclean conditions. Many died from infection.

It was just like current maps, only the west was cut off. If you go to Google Image Search and enter "civil war maps" you can see some examples.
That has to do with the direction the grass is cut. By cutting strips of grass in different directions it can be made to look like dark strips are next to light strips.
The hospital you were born in has your records, or you can look on your birth certificate.

A photographer, William Brady, took the first battlefied pictures in history. These were done in the civil war and you can find them online or in books on the civil war. He did move and pose some of the fallen men, but they are real pictures. I would say if you want an idea of what is like this is a good place to start.
