What did children do to have fun during the Great Depression?

When the stock market crashed in 1929, many banks and big industries shut down. The Great Depression affected American families and their children. Then the children had to work because of the Depression. And the kids ran away from home and set their lives on the railroads. They were called The Box Car Kids.

Now, imagine that in order to help your family buy that bread, you had to run around the neighborhood looking through trash cans to find bits of scrap metal. You'd be dirty, tired, hungry... then you only got a few pennies for all your hard work!

Parents werent always able to feed their children and sometimes they would have to send them off to other relatives because they couldn't afford to keep them.

And forty percent of young people from ages sixteen to twenty-four were neither in school nor working.
