Peasants basically did the work. They worked the land on behalf of the noble landowners, served in the army, provided labour to build the temples and monuments dug canals. To be engaged on building work was advantageous as it exempted you from paying taxes.

In the early days slaves were mainly confined to the households of the rich where they worked as servants. Owning slaves was a status symbol.

By the time of the New Kingdom (c.1500-330BC) slaves became more plentiful and were often engaged on construction work and working the land.
