What he didn't count on was the Gold Rush that was started by John Marshall at the mill Sutter built. Sutter was also prominent in the start of the Bear Flag Republic. John C. Fremont went to see Sutter before the republic was declared and told him he had to take sides. Fremont wanted to bring the Mexican governor to be held at Sutter's fort, but since Sutter had a Mexican land grant Sutter wasn't sure he could count on him for help. Finally, Sutter did agree to keep the governor and the rest is history. On Sept. 9, 1850 California became a state and because of the gold rush Sutter died a poor man.
