In towns and cities, people ate pretty much as they did on manors, except that they usually purchased cooked food, rather than cook it themselves. They ate a lot of bread, and they ate root vegetables and pickled or fresh vegetables. If they were poor they ate poor cuts of meat and few sweets. If they were rich they had good meats and desserts.

Very few people of the middle ages had kitchens. This was because fireplaces and chimneys were only invented in the twelfth century and only wealthy people could afford them for some time after that. There was such a thing as a kitchen hearth, which looked rather like a fireplace, but it was vented through a hole in the wall. People mostly cooked outdoors, or over a fire on a dirt floor or a brazier in the middle of the room, with smoke going out through a hole in the roof or under the roof peaks. People in towns and cities did not usually have kitchens, and they seldom had access to a place outside to cook.
