What did president Johnson decide to fight a war on poverty?

President Johnson created the Office of Economic Opportunity to coordinate a series of new antipoverty programs. These programs included the Job Corps, Head Start, Volunteers in Service to America, and a program that allowed American Indians to establish poverty programs on reservations.

All of these programs required the approval of Congress and all required that taxpayers pay for them.

Every US president has to do some "one" thing to establish his legacy, a few examples:

1. Washington was the FIRST US president; that's his legacy (no one can ever claim that one).

2. Jackson was the ONLY US president to ever pay off the US national debt.

3. Lincoln preserved the union; but people will remember him as "freeing the slaves."

4. FDR won WWII (or at least is remembered as the WWII US President).

LBJ wanted to be remembered as the man who created the "Great Society" in America, and that included his war on poverty. Unfortunately, Vietnam de-railed his legacy. His "Great Society" has succeeded, but that's not what people remember him for (which is why he refused remain the President of the US for another term).
