"Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work makes you free). Of course it was an attempt to calm the fears of the Jews and others who entered there so that they wouldn't realize that they were about to be executed.
"Arbeit Macht Frei""Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work brings freedom" or "Work liberates") was the sign over the gates of Auschwitz. It was placed there by Rudolf Hoess, the first commandant of the camp, though he did not invent this saying.___
This slogan was placed above the main entrances to all Nazi concentration camps, except Buchenwald. "Arbeit macht frei" had been adopted in 1929 as the slogan for the Weimar Republic's public works programme, which was introduced to provide jobs for the unemployed. The saying is, however, older ... Buchenwald used the slogan "Jedem das Seine" - "To each according to his merits" or "To each according to his just deserts"), which goes back to Classical Latin "Suum cuique".
"Arbeit Macht Frei" which means 'Work results in Freedom' This was written there to deceive the Jews entering the camp as when they entered they believed they would one day be free after working hard in the camp. They were unaware that all of them would end up murdered in the gas chambers there - over 2 million in that camp alone.
There are many signs in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The famous sign on the gate says "ARBEIT MACHT FREI", which is German for "Work makes you free".
It was a slogan designed to encourage the prisoners to work hard, in the hope that they may be liberated literally or emotionally.
The motto at the entrance to Auschwitz was "arbeit macht frei" which translated from the German means work makes you free. This was, of course, a lie. It was a death camp, not a labor camp.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The sign was over the gate to the main camp, not the death camp (Auschwitz II).
But of course as the Jews joked inside the camp, they would be set free when they died (freedom through the chimneys).
Perhaps unsurprisingly the motto was almost exactly the same as the Soviet Union employed in the Gulags.
"Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work makes you free)
The famous, dishonest inscription above the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp was "Arbeit Macht Frei" meaning, work makes you free.
Arbeit Macht Frei meaning in English Work makes you free

It's quite agreed that about 270,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 1943. However numerouse people do say the exact figure is 270,342 Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 1943. ___________ This very low figure needs a source.
There are actually two prison camps- Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz Birkenau. Auschwitz 1 was formally a soldier barracks, and so looks mildly 'normal' it has rows of houses, streets etc but with walls, barbed wire and towers. However, there is a gas chamber there which is rather horrific. Auschwitz Birkenau was the larger, purpose built camp- it is unbelievably massive. You enter through the main gates and their are literally sheds as far as the eye can see. Blown up gas chambers at the end from where the Germans attempted to hide the evidence.
Well their was never an exact same number of people dying at Auschwitz daily. There were days when no one was killed, Auschwitz was in existance for over a year before mass killings started, and there were days where 30 000 died.

Auschwitz I is located in Poland, and was originally used as a prison for the "outcasts of life" such as people with disabilities, deformities, gypsies, homosexuals and Jews (unfortunately, of course). Auschwitz II - Birkenau was started in 1941 and was larger and more "deadly and famous" than Auschwitz I. Auschwitz II is what most people referr to when they say "Auschwitz". Auschqitz III - Monowitz was a chemical plant where most of the workers were slave labourers. It is in use as a chemicals factory. Tours for the public are held at the remains of Auschwitz I and II. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz
