"Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work makes you free). Of course it was an attempt to calm the fears of the Jews and others who entered there so that they wouldn't realize that they were about to be executed.
"Arbeit Macht Frei""Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work brings freedom" or "Work liberates") was the sign over the gates of Auschwitz. It was placed there by Rudolf Hoess, the first commandant of the camp, though he did not invent this saying.___
This slogan was placed above the main entrances to all Nazi concentration camps, except Buchenwald. "Arbeit macht frei" had been adopted in 1929 as the slogan for the Weimar Republic's public works programme, which was introduced to provide jobs for the unemployed. The saying is, however, older ... Buchenwald used the slogan "Jedem das Seine" - "To each according to his merits" or "To each according to his just deserts"), which goes back to Classical Latin "Suum cuique".

"Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work makes you free)
There are many signs in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The famous sign on the gate says "ARBEIT MACHT FREI", which is German for "Work makes you free".It was a slogan designed to encourage the prisoners to work hard, in the hope that they may be liberated literally or emotionally.
'hitler was here- 1940'
There was no Auschwitz before the holocaust. On 25 Jan 1940 the SS decided to build the concentration camp Auschwitz near the town of Oswiecim (pronounced Auschwitz in German) Poland, that is how it got its name. You could say that Auschwitz looked like the Polish countryside before the holocaust. ------ Birkenau did, but the main Auschwitz camp didn't.

Just above the line that should either say your name or the word "Grantor"
Auschwitz I is located in Poland, and was originally used as a prison for the "outcasts of life" such as people with disabilities, deformities, gypsies, homosexuals and Jews (unfortunately, of course). Auschwitz II - Birkenau was started in 1941 and was larger and more "deadly and famous" than Auschwitz I. Auschwitz II is what most people referr to when they say "Auschwitz". Auschqitz III - Monowitz was a chemical plant where most of the workers were slave labourers. It is in use as a chemicals factory. Tours for the public are held at the remains of Auschwitz I and II. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz
