The Egyptians believed people possess a ka, or life-force, which exits the body at the time of death. Since the ka was sustained by nourishment in life, Egyptians believe it must continue receiving food even after death. Unlike the ka, ba were spiritual characteristics that remained stuck with the body and had to be released through ceremony as to reunite the departed person.

Originally, only very powerful people were thought to have ba, so commoners went to a dark, bleak realm that was opposite of life when they died, while nobility joined the Gods. Later in Egyptian history all people were judged at the time of their death, and the only the good of heart had their ba and ka reunited.
