In 1781, Cornwallis and his troops were set up in Yorktown, because this was a good location for them to get supplies. However, they were surrounded by French and American soldiers. The French navy took control of Chesapeake Bay, cutting off the British supply ships. Cornwallis was trapped and under seize for two weeks. On October 17, 1781, General Cornwallis had no other choice than to surrender.

Washington thought of a plan to trap the British. His plan was to bring his army south to join Greene. So the American and French Soldiers could surround Yorktown by land. If the French navy sailed into Chesapeake Bay, French Ships could also trap the British. Finally the British Army was trapped.
He set up camp and kept fires going (so the British thought they were at camp) and marched to Cornwallis.

General Cornwallis had set up his base at Yorktown, on the inner shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Well he had expected that his troops could be reinforced from New York by ship but the British had no way in.

The French and American forces led by Comte Rochambeau and General George Washington marched hundreds of miles to get to Yorktown, Virginia which is right off of the York river. They had to set diversions to confuse the British forces led by General Cornwallis. After firing many shots, and getting trapped, Cornwallis surrendered on October 20th. He was to injured to surrender himself so he had his troops and his second in command o'hara. they played the drums respectfully and they were obviously drunk as they marched out of Yorktown
James Armistead was an American spy who carried on the word that Britain was waiting for supplies in Yorktown, Virginia, to the French Navy. Then the navy set up a blockade of British ships. Cornwallis discovered too late that he was surrounded by Americans. cannons fired for weeks. Cornwallis tried to flee by ship, but the French navy blocked him. On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis sent a runner and a drummer boy with a white flag to surrender to George Washington. AMERICA WON THE WAR!
