What did the Greeks believe about gods and goddesses?

Greeks believed in a doctrine passed down from the oracle of Delphi to Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, called philosopha doctrine.

As a result of believing in philosopha doctrine and its pillars(Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Politics, Asthetics, Dialectics) Early Greeks believed in many gods. Paul defines this phenomenon when he visits Greece which is documented in Acts 17. Their gods are well documented and often referred to as Greek mythology.

My personal take on this Greek phenomenon, is that the Greek gods are directly connected to the fallen angels and their offspring, which are defined in Genesis 6.

Paul also warns how allowing philosopha doctrine to infiltrate among Christians can spoil the gospel, turning it into something for which it was never intended (Colossians 2). Liberation Theology, is evidence of how philosopha doctrine spoils the gospel of Christ.

The ancient Greeks believed that that the gods controlled all types of different things such as love and romance. This belief system provided scientific explanations things such as thunder and lightning.

The vast majority of Greeks and Romans of the first centuries of the Common Era were pious believers in their ancient pagan religion. However, some gradually began to explore other faiths. The Egyptian Mysteries continued to be adopted by some, while others investigated Mithraism or Judaism, as well as Christianity.

The evidence is that most Greeks were tolerant of Jews and Christians, although many could not understand why Christians risked the wrath of the gods by refusing to worship them. Some pagans are called "God-Fearers". God-Fearers were excessively careful to worship all the gods, for fear of offending any god they may miss. Until 70 CE, most Jews believed that God could only be worshipped in the Temple, where he was traditionally considered to reside, so many God-Fearers travelled to Jerusalem to worship God and leave offerings. This became an important source of revenue for the Temple. It is probable that some God-Fearers really believed that God was one of the many deities, while others were simply not sure, but unwilling to take a risk.

Significant numbers of conversions to Christianity also began to occur. It is believed that by the time of Emperor Constantine, at the beginning of the fourth century, up to 10 per cent of the population of the Roman Empire were Christians.
