smoke
The smoking of tobacco is believed to have began during the times of Native Americans. Christopher Columbus first discovered tobacco and how to smoke it about October 12, 1492. The man that America was named after, Amerigo Vespucci, discovered chewing tobacco. It wasn't until the time of the Nazis' that anyone knew that tobacco was cancerous. So to answer your question, smoking tobacco is thought to have started with the native Americans for there are no records before that. But logically it would make the most sense if it was started by tribes before civilization.
it was because that where they lived and they believed that the railroad was a monster "iron horse" they believed it was a terrifying monster with belching black smoke and moving at stunning speed.
no i don't even think the drug tobacco was discovered yet. this is a ridiculous answer - the native Americans were using tobacco as early as 400 AD, which was demonstrated by a carving of a Mayan priest smoking that dated around that time. The Native Americans tried to give Columbus tobacco in the 1490's. Tobacco was around long before Ben Franklin, in fact it was one of this countries largest exports before and after the revolution. I do not know if he smoked, but he almost definitely grew tobacco. Actually, while it is well-known that most of the 'founding fathers' did grow tobacco (as in George Washington, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson), there is no evidence that Ben ever smoked nor grew tobacco.

No, they did not smoke tobacco. Tobacco is native to North America and was smoked by the Native Americans there for millennia. It was not until English colonists made contact with some of these Native Americans in what is now the state of Virginia, during the early 1600s (Renaissance period), that it was then brought back and introduced to European society.
Smoke signals is a long form of long distance communication. These signals were used in Ancient China and by the Native Americans and Yamanas.
When the First Tanscontinental railroad was built, all the smoke came to where the Native Americans lived. They called the train the 'Iron Horse".

Tobacco is an American plant. When Columbus arrived in 1492, he observed Native Americans smoking it. They actually used to insert their cigars into their nostrils to smoke them. Columbus took tobacco back to Europe where, because of its addictive nature, it soon became very, very valuable. At one time tobacco leaves were actually used as currency.Smoking dates all the way back to 5000 BC, and has been recorded to be used in many different places and cultures around the world. Smoking was invented and evolved into being an offering to deities, and was used at religious ceremonies.Smoking was also used by priest, as "cleansing rituals or to allow shamans and priests to alter their minds for purposes of divination or spiritual enlightenment."The American Indians.
