On November 29, 1864 seven hundred members of the Colorado Territory militia attacked the Cheyenne and Arapaho villages. These bloody events changed history. Two-thirds of the Native Americans killed or maimed were women and children and a treaty was broken with the Sand Creek massacre .

During the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864, US Army soldiers attacked a peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho camp in Colorado. They indiscriminately killed around 200 people, mostly women, children, and elderly, despite promises of safety. The soldiers mutilated and scalped many of the victims.
Sand Creek High School was created in 1997.
News of the Sand Creek massacre outraged many citizens in the east. Since the massacre took place during the US Civil War, the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War investigated the incident.
