I just learned about this today in Theater Arts. Theater was popular in all ancient countries mainly because it provided entertainment for all classes of people, not just the rich ones. Greek plays mostly just provided entertainment, but when civilians started realizing what a profit theater was, actors were started to be held above others. Comedies and tragedies are still exemplified in our movie plots and TV shows today. Greeks had theater mostly for enjoyment, and those who were lower class men could have a job as a performer.
The Greeks modernised their civilisation on their own initiative. In doing so they borrowed some learning from other civilisations, including Egypt and Mesopotamia.
