Although they never ate as sumptuously as Hollywood would make us believe, the rich of ancient Egypt including the Pharaoh had a varied choice of food like fish, pork, chicken, bread, wine and beer; vegetables, fruits and sweetmeats, the last accounting for the very bad teeth many pharaohs proved to have at death. Another reason for that was that they were eating a lot of sand, too: study of teeth of mummies has shown that all Egyptians and even the pharaos unwittingly ate a lot of sand with (and in) their food which wore down and damaged their teeth.
