In colonial times, the colony of North Carolina had an agricultural economy. The two main crops were tobacco and cotton. The bulk of the land was held in huge plantations and worked by slaves. Independent Carolinians had smaller farms and allot fewer slaves.

There was room for jobs in other areas that were farm based, such as blacksmith, architect, livestock breeder, house servant, and ship builder.
