They called it New France.
The British took Canada from the French during the French and Indian War. The War was over in 1763. In 1867, The colonies of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia became the Dominion of Canada.
From 1682 to 1763, French land holdings in North America expanded significantly, particularly with the establishment of New France, which included vast territories stretching from Canada down to the Mississippi River. However, following the French and Indian War, France ceded much of its North American territories to Britain in 1763, leading to a dramatic reduction in French land holdings. This shift marked a significant decline in French influence on the continent. Overall, the period saw initial expansion followed by substantial territorial loss.
The area of New Territories is 952 square kilometers.

Both countries began colonies. The Dutch in the area we call New York and the French in the Northeast in what is now Canada.
The French colonies in the New World (Canada, but not only) were called "la Nouvelle France" (New France in English).
The French claimed and settled various territories around the world, including parts of North America (such as Canada and Louisiana), South America (such as French Guiana), Africa (such as Algeria and Senegal), the Caribbean (such as Haiti and Martinique), and the South Pacific (such as New Caledonia and French Polynesia).
English is spoken in all ten provinces and in all three territories. Quebec and New Brunswick have large numbers of French-speaking people.
Canada is officially a bilingual country. Quebec and New Brunswick are predominantly francophone, and many francophone communities exist in all provinces and territories of Canada. The Quebec has the largest number of French speakers. Parts of New Brunswick also have large numbers of French as do certain parts of Manitoba and Northern Ontario.French is reported to be spoken thoughout Canada, but mostly in Quebec, New Brunswick, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba. Canada is divided into different section; some sections are called provinces and some sections are called territories. the are 11 provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, prince Edward island, new Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Nunavut. there are 2 territories: Northwest territories and Yukon territories. for some reason they wanted to call those 2 places territories and the other 11 places provinces.
The main countries in America where French is spoken are Canada (in Quebec and parts of New Brunswick and Ontario), Haiti, and some smaller territories like Saint Martin and French Guiana. French is also an official language in some countries in the Caribbean, such as Martinique and Guadeloupe.
France still has several overseas possessions, commonly referred to as overseas territories. These include regions like Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Mayotte, French Guiana, and several islands in the South Pacific such as French Polynesia and New Caledonia. These territories have varying degrees of autonomy and are integral parts of the French Republic. Additionally, there are small territories such as Saint Pierre and Miquelon near Canada and the Crozet Islands in the Southern Ocean.
