The buffalo was the main source for food. The plains tribes used all of the animal and it was a religious symbol as well. Trains would stop and people would shoot buffalo herds from train windows. The result was the movement of the tribes onto reservations. They were starving to death and with the death of Sitting Bull a way of life was lost.
