Hoods were attached to tunics, cloaks and poncho-like garments called chapes to provide some protection against rain and wind. At first these hoods were made with fairly short points, but they gradually elongated by the 14th century into very long, almost scarf-like lirripipes, which could be used as a secret pocket in which to keep money or other items.
