Mapungubwe was one of the first southern African societies to have a class system. The ruined remains of Great Zimbabwe are open to different interpretations of what the role of its different areas and buildings was, but one interpretation was that its set-up was meant to seperate different classes of inhabitants. So 'class system' might well be the main comparable factor.
