Medieval castles with flags flying all over the place are a Hollywood invention. If there was a flag flying at all, it would be the flag that the lord of the castle also took into battle, which would either be the "regular" rectangular shape, or it might be a streamer. The flag would show the lord's coat of arms.

Today, castles showing the flag will usually do so only on national holidays and then use the national flag, king size. Only a king will still fly a large banner depicting his coat of arms on his own castle when he is 'at home'.
