The hieroglyphs of Hathor's name spell hwt-Hr, meaning the mansion or estate of Horus. These consist of the ground plan of a large house with its walled garden (a hollow square or rectangle with another rectangle in one corner) within which is seen the falcon representing Horus.

Often Hathor is shown with a set of cow horns on her head, with the sun disk between them; occasionally she has a combination of falcon, sunshade (or fan) and the ostrich feather of truth tucked into her headband. Most of these connect Hathor with the sun.

One symbol of Hathor is called a sistrum - a metal rattle associated with music, religious services, dancing and with Hathor herself.
