The Kayapo people are made up of many smaller groups including the Xikrin, Gorotire, Mekranoti and Metyktire. Their traditional lands are south of the Amazon basin in the Mato Grosso, along the Xingu river and in Pará, Brazil.

Their name, like so many native American tribal names, is not what they call themselves but what their enemies call them (Kayapo means "they look like monkeys"). Their real name is Mebêngôkre - Water Hole People.
