Idaho, Nevada, and Utah all have dry climates. The thunderstorms that produce tornadoes generally require large amounts of warm, moist air.
While Idaho is much better known for its potatoes, it does produce a significant portion of the nation's supply of hops. Idaho's farmers produce some 7 million to 8 million pounds of hops annually from around 4,000 acres devoted to the crop. This accounts for roughly 10% of the nation's supply, but is nowhere near Washington's 30,000 acres.
While Idaho farmers do produce higher-than-average quality hay, typically selling it even across state borders for dairies, they are much more famous for the potatoes they grow.
It always varies year by year, but the top states are usually Idaho, Maine, Oregon, and Washington.
