However, he did preserve the union (many monarchists at the time said that a large nation could not exist as a democracy, due to sectional differences -- Lincoln proved othewise), made the Civil War into a struggle over slavery, signed the Homestead Act into law, designated Yosemite Valley for preservation, and chose to have a transcontinental railroad.

And Lincoln did the former despite a series of highly incompetent generals, and several Cabinet members who thought him unfit to be President -- starting with his Secretary of State.
