"Blitzen" is the German word for Lightening. So if you blitz something, you do so at 'lightening' speed.

During WWII, the German army carried out what was called a "blitzkrieg", which were 'lightening' attacks on their enemies.

[Also, a great many 'traditions' concerning 'Christmas' (such as Christmas trees) were brought back to England by Queen Vitoria's husband (I believe his name was Albert).]

I say this to say, that two of "Santa's" "reindeer" were "Donner and Blitzen"

which are German for "Thunder and Lightening".

So the reindeer, Donner and Blitzen, are actually called thunder and lightning. The German word Donnerstag literally means Thunder day, but it is actually Thursday. Our day, Thursday, is named after the Viking God Thor, who was god of Thunder and Lightning! It is funny to see how it all links in :)
