Druids were a class of priests among the native Celtic peoples of England and Wales before the Roman conquest. The Romans came into conflict with them at the Welsh island of Anglesey, where most were wiped out (apparently for conducting child sacrifices, but probably for instigating defiance against Roman rule).

Druid is from two Celtic (Ancient British) words: dru(tree, especially oak) and wid (to know), since they used various forms of magic and powers based around types of tree.
