Gentlemen warfare refers to how the battle is conducted and the behavior and conduct of each soldier on the battlefield. For example, quarters shall be given to all surrendering troops, targeting of all civilians and properties were prohibited and specific targeting of officers were considered ungentlemen-like. Battles were guided by very specific rules understood by both sides, though never practiced fully. Moreover, raids and ambushes were out of the question; infantry line formed up on both sides and exchanged volleys until one side broke.
