Say someone is in a low paying job, always in debt and accepts that as what must be. They're keeping themselves ignorant and intentionally staying at a low level. By accepting that that is the way things must be, he/she is consciously keeping himself from doing anything to improve his/her situation.
Alternatively, someone who doesn't put any effort to think of how his actions or words affect others or what underlying means/motives other people may have is keeping himself emotionally stunted. He's accepting things the way they are and literally keeping himself stupid by not thinking deeper about his relationships.
