The Russians did the same thing with their Trans-Siberian Railroad, from Russian Europe to Russian Asia on the Pacific Coast (Korean region). Japan, being near the Russian coast and Korea, felt like a "dagger being pointed at their throat" (their words). Korea now became a strategic spot.
