Memorial Day is a US holiday and is not celebrated in Canada. The weekend prior to Memorial Day is the Victoria Day long weekend in Canada. Victoria Day is the celebration of the birth of our beloved Queen Victoria, who was our Monarch when Canada was created in 1867. Her Majesty's birthday was the 24th day of May. Victoria Day is celebrated on May 24th, if that date falls on a Monday, or otherwise on the Monday immediately prior to that date.
It was originally called Armistice Day, which was in honor of the men who fought in World War I, whereas Veterans Day is in honor of all those who have served in the US armed forces.

They use this free time to remember the soldiers that fought in World War 2.(Remembrance Day is a holiday, at least for schools, and ceremonies are performed at cenotaphs across the country. The school assemblies mentioned above, are now the day before Remembrance Day.)
