I have two, they are different. One is connected to a red, white and blue ribbon with a wolverine at the top. The medal itself is round , about the size of a silver dollar with the words twenty third national encampmenton G.A.R. on it along with two men standing beside a large shield, adate of 1889, Milwaukee, Wisconsin , August 27-30. They are elaborate with numerous markings on both sides.
They are both for sale--I would send pictures with good offer. PS-there is no mention of women on the medals!
The Grand Army of the Republic was formed in the latter part of the 19th century. It was an organization of Union army veterans. The organization, however, refused to allow Irish Americans or freed Blacks to join.

There isn't one specific medal for that. Depending on the circumstances--were you under hostile fire, did you risk your own life, like that--you could be looking at anything from the Medal of Honor to an Army Commendation Medal.
