"Son of William."

In some of the earliest English "surnames," the Germanic/Scandinavian form was used, more specifically identifying a person by a parent's name (e.g. Leif Ericson, son of Eric;Beatrice Wilhelmsdotter, daughter of Wilhelm).

So the name Williamson originally meant William's son.
