During the Age of Exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries, England lagged behind many other nations in the effort to crisscross the globe, explore, trade, colonize, and so forth, for several reasons. Although a powerful nation, it as yet lacked the extra resources of, for instance, Spain and France. Furthermore, it suffered from tremendous internal strife as a result of tensions caused at the highest level of society by the religious reformation that swept through the country in the 1500s and beyond.
