As he was Portuguese, many of his Spanish crewmen and captains of the other ships opposed him to the point of several mutiny's. He fought off all, but lost two of his ships by havary and one by a deserting captain. Before he could finish the journey, he was killed in attempt to help one of his Philippine allies against another Philippine chief, Lapu Lapu. He confronted an army of 1500 with just 49 men. And the enemy concentrated on him alone, while the other 49 escaped, and finished the journey with only 18 survivors in the smallest of the five ships
