The Spaniards had found gold on the west coast, I believe, so the English believed they would find gold as well in Virginia. And then again, why wouldn't it be appealing? A new start to your life, an entirely new world to step into and change things in. Some of the English were tired of being labeled as "the poor" and being unable to change it, some of them were seeking land, some of them wanted to be able to practice religion, some were tired of the King and English Parliament, and others were seeking adventure.
